Great to hear. Let me know if it works well for you.

    Sort of.

To be more precise, Apple doesn’t give any access to apps at all when the screen is off (unless you’re a music playing app). So I’ve simulated it in the last release with a “Blackout mode”. When you enable this mode and start a watch with the volume control, then the screen is disabled, and goes black except for one line of text. You can enter “a “lap” by pressing up-Volume, and when done, you press down-Volume which turns the screen back on.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the suggestion! So if you choose one of the smaller watch faces, you should be able to fit at least eight watches on the screen even with a smaller phone. Then you have eight stop buttons you can press. In this scenario, you'll want to turn off Auto-sort to avoid them moving on you when you hit done. Does that suffice?

(One other suggestion I've heard is to have a spotter as well as a timer. The spotter keeps their eyes on the pool and calls out the name or lane and the other keeps their eyes on the phone. The communication might be "7...stop. 4 stop. 3,6.. stop stop" to give a warning of what's coming.)

If you mean that all the runners can be stopped and/or restarted as a group, yes; that's covered. If you mean that, say, 5 of 20 can be started up again at once, no; there's no way to designate that those five are a group. (A somewhat ugly workaround would be to have 4 races going at once. When group A is ready to go, you manually switch to their race and hit All Start, then switch to race B and hit All Start for that group, etc.)

So, the “race type” is just an attribute of a race, not a way to create a new race.

Instead, to get ready, you would go to the Group of runners, and hit “New Watches for this team”. Then specify “New Race” instead of “Add Watches”. This will create a separate race with that group. Set the race type and/or name, then do those steps again for the second race, etc.

Then day of race, just go to the History tab, select the first race, tap on the title, and hit “Make Current Race”. After the race, do the same for the second.

You can switch between races with “Make Current Race” as often as you wish. In fact, you can even track two (presumably long) races at once, as running watches will continue when the race isn’t “current”.

FYI, I’ve implemented something to make this easier. Would you…

Well, looking at the code, it very specifically says if it's greater than 1, then ask, otherwise just add it. I think the idea was if you're adding multiple people one at a time, you wouldn't want to be asked each time. But that would happen by tapping on a person, then "Add to Current Race", not on the Group listing screen.

So I can't think why I would do that, so ... yes, let's call it a bug.

And why ... do you have a group of one person? If it was just to create a race, then instead create a New Race in the Main Menu. and then add individuals to it.

I'll fix in next release. Thanks for reporting it!

Hockey laps is interesting. Not being involved in hockey, what does that mean? Training laps around the ice?

Can you give a specific example? I’ve been looking at relay races specifically, trying to figure out a way to support it without overly complicating the UI. Is that what you mean by a team, or is it looking at the total / average performance?

Yes, today, you can track a relay team on a single watch, but I think his goal is to record the times separately for each runner on their own watch, so you can see their individual contribution over time. I think it's a good idea, but it adds a fair amount of complexity: do you track more than one team in a race? How do you report a teams performance? So I haven't figured out how to deal with some of those issues and keep it intuitive.

The original idea would be to create a "team" for that purpose, which you could name as a race if you like. People can be on as many teams as you like. (People Tab > Edit > New Team > 9/26 Race > Done), then just tap on that group and select the folks that belong in that race. Once you have the group, you can hit New Watches for this team, and it will offer the choice of creating a new race or adding this group to the current race.

Note that later the 9/26 Race group could be deleted without affecting the Race, or the people's history.

Does that match what you're looking for?

Not sure I understand. Can you give some more detail what this might look like? For example, with a one mile race with four laps, do you mean a section on the main watch page that would list the four runners who have the best time on each lap? On the report, you can already sort by best time; do you mean sorting by each lap? Maybe give some more context on how this would be used?

Thanks for the proposal. I'm not clear why it is important to have this in the auto-sort, rather than just using the report for the race (which even includes the position number as of 2.0.2)?

It's a great idea, although a fair amount of work. There are actually two possible versions of this:

One is to be able to email the data for a Watches race or individual history to another coach, which could then be loaded into another copy of Watches. I think this is the one you mean, correct?

The other would enable syncing of data across iCloud between devices owned by the same person. I don't think you mean this one.
